The Meaning of Débrouillard
Débrouillard is named after the French word for resourcefulness—a quality deeply woven into Modern Pentathlon's origins.
Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games, championed this ideal through his Débrouillard Movement, celebrating youth who excelled across multiple athletic disciplines.
This vision led Coubertin to invent Modern Pentathlon as the only sport specifically created for the Olympic Games, designed to test adaptability, versatility, and resilience. In doing so, he cemented ‘débrouillard’ as a defining trait of the complete athlete. This founding philosophy is the legacy that continues to shape the sport and inspire our brand.
